Digital Marketing Skills gained as Intern in Malaysia

Hi, I’m Vlada, and I have just spent 6 months completing the Malaysia Marketing Internship for Conservation. I have been interested in digital marketing for a while but haven’t had a chance to get any formal experience. So this was the perfect opportunity to gain valuable marketing skills whilst helping conservation efforts. It’s a cause I strongly believe in.

Living and working in Malaysia has been an incredible experience. I really got to immerse myself in the diverse Malaysian culture, as well as travel to incredible project locations. But most importantly I have learnt so much about digital marketing. And in a way that I definitely wouldn’t have if I interned back home in an office.

Why did you choose the Malaysia Marketing Internship for Conservation?

I graduated with a BSc in Biology from the University of Bristol so I had developed a lot of conservation based skills. I already had nurtured a passion for protecting the environment. Therefore combining my conservation knowledge with my interest in marketing was perfect for me. As well as the opportunity to travel around Malaysia for my work!

What Digital Marketing Skills gained as Intern in Malaysia?

I started my internship with very limited knowledge of marketing but the willingness to learn. Before I left for Malaysia I studied a lot of useful digital marketing theory from the Hubspot courses. Plus, I was mentored by Barbara, my boss. However, I learnt the most whilst working on the job and applying my theory to practise. It was my responsibility to keep a constant online brand presence. I accomplished this through posting regularly on Ecoteer’s Instagram and Facebook pages. Plus updating the Instagram story with interesting daily occurrences. Also, I wrote various blogs about whichever project needed the most publicity at the time. Also, highlighting important environmental causes. Although this seems like a simple task, when updating social media it is important to write in a consistent tone to connect with the readers. This was my first challenge. Finally, I even tried my hand at email marketing to communicate with our previous customers and drive sales.

What is the most important skill you think you have learnt during your 6 months?

By living and breathing marketing in Malaysia, I learnt a lot about the need for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) in any content that I create. As well as managing social media, I regularly updated content on Ecoteer’s website. Being found easily on search engines, is one of the most important parts of any company’s digital marketing. Therefore, grasping this and assessing the right strategy to take is definitely a skill that will be more than useful in my future career.

What was the best part of the internship?

Working in such incredible locations was truly amazing, But at the end of the day I decided to intern with Ecoteer to gain experience in marketing. Therefore my favourite part of the internship was that I got to work on so many different aspects of digital marketing. Instead of learning just a few skills, I feel that I now have a much broader understanding of the field and all that it entails.

What is next for you career wise?

This internship has opened my eyes to the world of digital marketing. So I definitely hope to secure a job in this field back home in London. I have had the most incredible time learning with a view. So I aim to use my skills to build a successful career doing what I am passionate about.
